Section through an upflow condensing gas furnace. The percentage is how much of the gas becomes heat. The bigger difference is the vent.

Two PVC pipes bring air in and carry cool, wet exhaust out, and the furnace needs a drain.

Basement section: a 96 to 97% furnace with two PVC pipes, exhaust and intake, sloping up to the joists and out through the rim joist above grade and the snow line. A condensate line runs through a trap to a floor drain.   1. Fresh air comes in one pipe, exhaust leaves by the other.
  2. The pipe ends sit a foot above the snow line.
  3. Exhaust water runs to a floor drain or pump.
  4. The water heater, now alone in the chimney, usually needs a liner.

Single-stage, two-stage or modulating.

Most winter hours need only part of a furnace’s heat. Staging decides how it delivers that.

Runs on low most of the winter and steps up on the coldest nights.

The right choice for most Denver houses, especially ones with central air.

Size it from a load calculation.

A Manual J load calculation adds up the heat your house loses on a cold night. Pick the smallest furnace that covers it.

Most furnaces are set about a fifth lower at Denver’s altitude, 4% for every 1,000 feet above sea level. Some modulating furnaces derate less, and the manual says by how much.
