Start with the exact model instructions
Clearances and permitted orientations vary by furnace and configuration. Ask the contractor to identify the exact installation manual used for the proposal. A generic clearance number cannot replace that document.
Draw every connection
The written scope should identify the supply transition and return connection. It should also show the gas, electrical and control work. When cooling equipment sits above the furnace, include the coil arrangement and condensate route.
Condensing and noncondensing furnaces use different venting approaches. Ask where combustion air and exhaust will travel, how they terminate, and how the selected route follows the listed instructions and local requirements.
Protect future access
Photograph the whole room before taking model-label closeups. Include nearby equipment, shelving, walls and the approach to the furnace. Ask how the filter comes out and which panels need to open for service.
