Connect equipment selection to the air path
ENERGY STAR advises contractors to use the actual characteristics of the home for sizing and to verify airflow against manufacturer specifications. The old furnace input or cabinet width alone does not establish the required capacity.
Describe rooms that run hot or cold now. Ask whether the problem points to the equipment, duct restrictions, leakage or the return path. A new furnace cannot correct an unexamined distribution problem by itself.
Inspect the transitions
The sheet-metal connections above and below the cabinet guide air between equipment and ducts. Ask what will be retained, rebuilt or sealed. If an indoor cooling coil remains, confirm its compatibility with the proposed blower and controls.
Leave a usable filter path
The filter location should be named in the proposal. Ask the installer to show its size, airflow direction and removal path before the crew leaves. Make sure adjacent walls or pipes do not turn routine replacement into a service call.
